Hardip Dhillon (our hygienist) with a lovely patient

Does a visit with the hygienist for scaling and root planning fill you with dread?

If you’ve ever felt reluctant to have scaling carried out because of your concerns about the discomfort caused by deep scaling…then at Sparkle Dental Boutique we may have the answer.  We now can use a gel called Oraqix to give you a more comfortable visit.

Deep scaling or root planning is a procedure recommended by a hygienist or dentist when patients have gum disease. Gum disease is caused by plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that constantly forms on teeth. If plaque is not removed thorough daily brushing and cleaning between the teeth, the bacteria produce toxins that can irritate and inflame the gums. Left untreated, gum tissues can separate from the teeth and form spaces called pockets. The pockets provide a home for more bacteria and if left untreated the process can continue until the bone and other tooth supporting tissues are destroyed resulting in tooth loss.

Hardip Dhillon, Hygienist at Sparkle Dental Boutique says “Oraqix is a gel which is placed into the pockets, resulting in anaesthesia of the area for about 20 minutes. This allows me to carry out treatment procedures such as probing, scaling and root planing.  Patients that I have used Oraqix on are extremely happy with the result commenting on the speed in which treatment can now be carried out and the increased comfort levels. Many have requested future procedures to be carried out using this miracle gel!”

“The great news for my patients is that I have seen a fantastic response to this treatment as the procedure allows gum tissue to reattach to roots that are clean and smooth, allowing patients to hang on to their teeth longer, whilst preventing any sensitivity problems”.

If your gums are bleeding, red, swollen or tender, if your teeth are loose or beginning to separate then a visit with Hardip, may be the best way to look after your gums and teeth!

On a recent trip to Dubrovnik, the pearl of the Adriatic, one of Eastern Europe’s best old towns, it was like Venice without the canals!

The highlight of the trip in Dubrovnik was strolling the scenic mile around the Old Town’s city walls, the root or heart of the city. The monumental walls that encircle Dubrovnik punctuated by towers and overlooking the sea, are undoubtedly the city’s most famous feature.

With talk of roots and canals…root canal treatment comes to mind!

Sunita Verma, Principal at Sparkle Dental Boutique says, “Root canal treatment is a procedure needed when the blood or nerve supply of the tooth (pulp) is infected through decay or injury. In the early stages, you may not feel any pain but sometimes the tooth may darken in colour which is a sign that the nerve of the tooth has died or is dying.  If the nerve supply of the tooth becomes infected, the infection may spread through the root canal system of the tooth and an abscess may form.”

Sunita goes on to say, “An abscess is an inflamed area and sometimes it looks like a bubble in which pus collects which can cause swelling of the tissues around the tooth. The symptoms of an abscess can range from dull ache to severe pain, sensitivity to hot and cold and the tooth may be tender when you bite. If root canal treatment is not carried out, the infection will spread and the tooth may need to be taken out.”

What does the treatment involve?

The aim of the treatment is to remove all infection from the root canal. The root is then cleaned and filled to prevent any further infection over 2 or 3 visits.

At the first appointment, the infected pulp is removed. Any abscesses, which may be present, will also be drained at this time. The root canal is then cleaned and shaped ready for the filling. A temporary filling is put in and the tooth is left to settle.

The tooth is checked at a later visit and when all the infection has cleared, the tooth is permanently filled. This tooth is now sometimes referred to as a `dead’ tooth. As a dead tooth is more brittle, it may be necessary to restore the tooth with a crown to provide extra support and strength to the tooth.

bling1.JPG

In recent times, bling has become synonymous with the values of playing hard, looking good and lapping up the finest - the sassy/gaudy style, the Bentley, the Jacuzzi, the Dom Perignon, the fur coat, the first class ticket, the Gucci, the Prada, the Rolex, and so on.

We all love a bit of bling whether it be chains, rings, bracelets, watches…the list goes on…but a bit of bling that will remain timeless and forever in style is your smile!  A blinging smile helps to build confidence, psychologically and socially - and may help your love life too!

In a recent survey, people said that if money were no object, half of them would whiten their teeth and one in three would straighten their teeth for that perfect Hollywood bling smile.

Dr Sunita Verma from Sparkle Dental Boutique, Ealing says, `Patients are sometimes surprised to find that to have a blinging smile is more affordable than they may have thought. Patients can spread payment for treatment over a period of 12 – 60 months.  For example, for treatment costing £2,000.00 over 36 months, the cost is about £2.00 per day – less than a cup of coffee.’

A blinging smile can be achieved by replacing unsightly silver amalgam fillings with white fillings; tooth whitening to give your discoloured teeth that healthy brightness; braces to bring your crooked teeth gently into perfect alignment and a smile makeover using porcelain veneers or crowns to give you the ultimate bling smile!

It is said that you need to kiss many frogs before you find your prince…well that maybe the case, and if it is, frogs please take note!

Many frogs suffer from bad breath or halitosis occasionally, the exact number of frogs with bad breath is not known, but it is common.

44ktest_495x485.jpg

How can I tell if I have bad breath?

A main problem with bad breath is that the only frog not to notice it, is the frog affected. Often, the only way to know about it is if a frog comments on it. However, most frogs are too polite to comment on another frog’s bad breath. You may have to rely on fellow frogs to be honest and tell you if you have bad breath. Perhaps you could ask your dentist next time you have a check up. A dentist will normally be able to say if you have bad breath. Gum disease is a common cause of bad breath and a dentist will be able to advise on treatment if you have gum disease.

Some frogs suggest a simple test which you can do yourself to detect bad breath. Lick the inside of your wrist. Wait a few seconds for the saliva to dry. Then smell the licked part of the wrist. If you detect an unpleasant smell you are likely to have bad breath.

Bad breath

Bad breath is thought to come from bacteria within the mouth. As the bacteria break down proteins and other debris in the mouth, they release foul smelling gases. One or more of the following may contribute to the build up of bacteria and bad breath.

Food stuck between teeth

Normal teeth brushing may not clear bits of food which can get stuck between teeth. The food then rots and becomes riddled with bacteria. Regular flossing can clear and prevent this problem.

Plaque, calculus and gum disease

Dental plaque is a soft whitish deposit that forms on the surface of teeth. It forms when bacteria combine with food and saliva. Plaque contains many types of bacteria. Calculus, sometimes called tartar, is hardened calcified plaque. It sticks firmly to teeth. Gum disease means infection or inflammation of the tissues that surround the teeth. If your gums look inflamed, or regularly bleed when you clean your teeth, you are likely to have gum disease. The severity can range form mild to severe.

Coating on the back of the tongue

In some frogs, a ‘coating’ develops on the back part of the tongue.

The treatment of bad breath coming from within the mouth is good oral hygiene.

    • In addition to brushing, it is important to clean between the teeth using dental floss, woodsticks or an inter-dental brush as recommended by your dentist.

    • Use a tongue cleaner and clean right to the back of the tongue.

    • Use a mouthwash recommended by your dentist. The best time to use it is just before sleeping.

    • Drink plenty of fluids, avoiding too much coffee.

    • Clean your mouth after eating milk products, fish and meat.

    • Chew sugar-free gum, especially if your mouth feels dry.

    • Eat fresh, fibrous vegetables.

So if you want a frog to hop onto your lily pad sometime soon…brush out those bits of dragonfly between your teeth and get croaking…ribbitt…ribbitt!

All down my street

smiles opened like roses

sun licked me and tickled me

sun said, Didn’t you believe me

when I said I’d be back?

I blinked my eyes, I said,

Sun, you are too strong for me

where’d you get those muscles?

Sun said, Come and dance.

All over the park

smiles opened like roses

babies kicked off their shoes

and sun kissed their toes.

All those new babies

all that new sun

everybody dancing walking but dancing.

All over the world

sun kicked off his shoes

and came home dancing

licking and tickling

kissing crossing-ladies and fat babies

saying to everyone

Hey you are the most beautiful

dancing people I’ve ever seen

with those smiles like roses!

Jump into 2009 with your new smile!

With the advent of the New Year, commit to becoming dentally fit and having a sparkling smile to be proud of!

At this time of year, we at Sparkle Dental Boutique, see many patients who have made it their New Years resolution to give up smoking.  Some patients indulge in a teeth whitening procedure once they have given up smoking for good, whilst others whiten their teeth whilst they are giving up smoking as an incentive to keep off the cigarettes!

There is also an upturn in the number of patients we see at the practice who have committed to losing weight and becoming healthier. Many celebrate achieving their goals through teeth whitening procedures, whilst others have total smile transformations where their brand new look is accessorised with a perfect new smile!

We also see many patients at this time of year, for whom it’s time to `get out there’ again. Whether it be to start a new relationship, hitting a milestone birthday, getting the job that they’ve always wanted, or just going for the next challenge!

Whatever `getting out there’ may mean to you, a beautiful smile will certainly give you the confidence to put your best foot forward in 2009!
